I’m Heidi Thompson, a mother and writer living in Hawaii.

For Our Daughters offers a counterculture perspective on the wellbeing of girls. I am interested in exploring how we can encourage the next generation of women to trust nature, trust their instincts and dare to question the status quo.

I'm a former feminist who once taught Women’s Studies, worked at an abortion clinic and pursued a high-demand sales career in a male-dominated industry. I obtained a Masters degree in Women's Studies because I cared about women and girls. I thought a feminist education was the way to solve violence against women and inequality.

I never imagined I would live in a world where it is controversial to say men and women are different and females need single-sex spaces. I never expected to regret the casual sex I had, and it never occurred to me that I would happily give up my exhausting career pursuits for motherhood.

Women my age were sold a bill of goods that did not live up to the promises made. Many of us are waking up to the truth that the feminist utopia we were told to believe in does not exist.

The flawed narratives that have infiltrated our classrooms, media and public spaces are harming women and girls. We are being erased in language and in culture, and we are being gaslit into believing it is for our own good.

I want a better world for my daughter, and for all our children.

I want this Substack to contribute to these conversations so that our daughters don’t have to learn the hard way, as we did.
